A Message For You | Chap's Expressions - A Woman's Point of View!
A Medical Moment

December 2008

Wrapping paper, lights, trees, great meals, and lots of shopping are all signs that the holiday season is fast approaching. While this is a time for giving and sharing, for a large number of people this is also a time of great stress and anxiety. Several things can contribute to a condition called the “holiday blues” – finances, not sure what to buy, not able to spend time with long-distance relatives, and so many parties to name a few. Other factors can be the shopping itself, long lines, crowded parking lots, the item without a price tag and the child that keeps crying. To help keep your stress and anxiety levels under control try a few of the following suggestions:

  • Organize your time and prioritize your activities.

  • Set realistic goals for spending – make a list of the people you need to buy for and set a limit of how much to spend on those gifts. Spend cash and leave the credit cards at home.

  • Get creative- consider handmade gifts. Everyone loves a present that was made especially with them in mind.

  • Shop early in the morning when the malls are empty, avoid the week-ends.

  • Start a gift exchange club with your long-distance relatives. Do it early enough so that presents can be mailed in time.

  • Share the entertaining- you do not have to host all the parties. It is also okay to decline an invitation.

  • Do something that is free and fun- drive around different areas to see how the houses are decorated.

Remember that the holiday season is a time to be thankful, to celebrate good times, and look forward to new things. Know your limits and if you start to feel excessively down or sad - consult with your physician as the “holiday blues” can be a serious medical condition that needs further evaluation.
