A Little Bit More Than the Blues

Feeling down lately, not able to sleep, anxious and not wanting to be around people? Did the time change and the days are becoming shorter? You could be suffering from winter blues, but if you just can’t seem to shake it off you could have a more extreme condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is believed that SAD is the result of a lack of exposure to the sun and is more common in women. Symptoms usually start in October and last thru April. During this time, a person may pull away from social interaction, experience loss of libido, gain weight and not be able to go about normal day to day activities. Some studies have shown an increase in crimes such as rape, incest or physical abuse during this time. There are a number of treatments available which include light therapy - where one is placed in a controlled area with bright lights to simulate sunshine. Other options are medications in the form of antidepressants as prescribed by your healthcare provider and behavior therapy along with stress management counseling. Educate your family and friends regarding SAD to get their support. Get as much light as possible and stay out of dark areas during daylight hours. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise outdoors daily. Seek out professional help if your symptoms last more than a few days.
