July 2008 For more than 15 years Angela Jones-Hackley, a native of Washington, D. C. has worked toward improving conditions for the District and its residents. As an advocate and Executive Director for DC Action for Children, an independent, non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to improving conditions for youth, children and families in D. C., Angela has testified before numerous committees and others on issues affecting the District children, including the bill to finance the new baseball stadium. According to her testimony, the bill would jeopardize the ability of the city to adequately fund essential services such as subsidized health care, emergency shelter, student employment, and other such programs. Angela pleaded before the city council committee on behalf of a population that was unable to plead for itself. According to Angela, it is her passion and strong sense of commitment to those in need that keeps her going each day despite the many ups, downs and turns of such a political endeavor. Angela recognized that we are given blessings and it is up to each of us to recognize and accept those blessings. Because she accepted her blessings there is always something to pull her back when the road gets tough and she feels like giving up. Currently, Angela continues to serve her community as Vice President for Community at the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, one of the Metropolitan Washington area’s largest and most hard hitting philanthropic organizations. This month, Chap’s Expressions applauds Angela and others like her who has committed their lives to advocacy, fulfilling life’s purpose in helping others.
