Religion, God and Health

A

re religious people healthier than those who are not? Yes, according to research by the National Institute for Health Care Research (NIHR) headed by Dr. David Larson. This research concluded that both mentally and physically, religious people have better health that their nonreligious friends. Often, people will turn to religion or their belief in God when faced with sickness or terminal diagnoses. This research also indicates that doctors believed that religion and spirituality helps patients cope with illness and puts patients in a positive state of mind. According to Fox News report 2007, doctors who are religious or spiritual see that impact on health as positive and believe it “strongly influences health.” There are many benefits that religion has on one’s health including the promotion of healthy habits such diet, avoiding the use of tobacco and alcohol. Other reasons include developing a positive self-image and establishing a purpose of life. Positive attitudes will help people not to become depressed, will promote activity with social groups, slows the aging process, and has a favorable impact on the immune system. Generally, people who perceive themselves to be happy live longer and have a more fulfilled life. Don’t be confused, religious people do get sick, but the consensus starts and ends with the fact that many patients rely on religion, God and a number of other religious resources to help them get thru the challenges that arise during times of illness.
