May 2009 Marriage is a Time-honored Tacit Have you seen the TV commercial of a man and woman strolling in the park? By the looks of things, they’ve reached an impasse in their relationship. As they continue on their walk, they approach an older couple in their late seventies holding hands. As the young man and woman pass by, they look back at the older couple, without a word spoken the two (young couple) lock hands and continue on their way. Successful marriages have a time-honored tacit. They have an unspoken agreement to make the relationship work. These couples determine in their minds that their marriage and love for one another, out weighs their differences or any of life’s circumstances that the two might face: lack of money, a child’s death, aging parents, or health problems. They are resolved in building a life together that gives them meaning, purpose, and enrichment to their individual personhood. Learning to coexist in marriage for 50 plus years takes a resolve to live together without the forethought of personal differences and life’s circumstances. Blessings and Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers around the world. Chap |
